Balko is proud to have been selected as one of the organizations participating in NEXuS, Canada’s new Defence Innovation Secure Hub (DISH) dedicated to uncrewed systems (UxS).

This appointment marks an important milestone for our company. It recognizes the expertise Balko has developed in sensor integration and geospatial data acquisition while providing an opportunity to collaborate with industry, researchers and government partners to help advance Canada’s next generation of technologies.

A new innovation ecosystem for Canadian defence

Address by Canada’s Minister of National Defence, David McGuinty, at the launch of the NEXuS program.

NEXuS is one of the first hubs established under BOREALIS, the Bureau of Research, Engineering and Advanced Leadership in Innovation and Science, an initiative of the Government of Canada.

Its mission is to create an environment where industry, academia, research organizations, end users and government can work together to accelerate the development, testing and validation of innovative technologies for the defence and security sectors.

Led by Aéro Montréal through Espace Aéro, the consortium will receive $29.6 million over two years and will be primarily based at the YMX Innovation Centre in Mirabel, Quebec. This new infrastructure will help bring innovators closer to end users while fostering collaboration throughout the technology development process.

The strength of complementary expertise

The Connectiv sensor was presented under the drone of the company ARA Robotique, which is also one of the participating organizations.

One of NEXuS’ greatest strengths lies in the diversity of the organizations involved.

The consortium brings together companies specializing in robotics, aerospace, communications, embedded systems, technology integration and data acquisition, as well as research organizations, academic institutions and government partners.

Participating organizations include ARA Robotics, BEONYX Robotics, C3RiOS Systems, CS GROUP Canada, DARIT Technologies, Laflamme Aero, Marconi, Octasic, CRIAQ, the BRP Advanced Technologies Centre at the Université de Sherbrooke, YMX Tech Park and several other partners working together to establish NEXuS as a leading Canadian innovation hub.

This diversity is a key driver of innovation. Autonomous systems rely on the seamless integration of multiple complementary technologies. By bringing together these areas of expertise within a single ecosystem, NEXuS will help accelerate the development of more integrated, more capable and more adaptable solutions.

Balko’s contribution

Maude Pelletier, president and founder of Balko, presented the Connectiv sensor to dignitaries at the launch of the NEXuS program.

At Balko, we develop advanced data acquisition solutions for drones and ground vehicles. Our expertise is built on sensor integration, data synchronization and the software that controls these systems and streamlines data processing.

Our modular Connectiv platform makes it possible to combine multiple sensing technologies within a single architecture while allowing configurations to evolve as operational needs and technologies change.

This approach naturally aligns with the vision behind NEXuS. Our role is not to address every challenge associated with autonomous systems on our own, but rather to contribute our expertise in sensor integration alongside other consortium members to help develop increasingly capable and adaptable solutions.

An opportunity to advance our expertise

Beyond the contribution Balko will make to the consortium, participating in NEXuS represents an outstanding opportunity for growth and innovation.

By collaborating with experts in robotics, communications, autonomous platforms, aerospace and embedded systems, our team will broaden its expertise, establish new partnerships and continue advancing our technologies. The innovations resulting from these collaborations will also benefit our traditional markets, where modularity, interoperability and technology integration are equally important.

This initiative will also help strengthen Canadian technological expertise. Uncrewed and autonomous systems have been identified as strategic capabilities within Canada’s new Defence Industrial Strategy. By developing our technologies in Canada alongside Canadian partners, we are helping build an innovation ecosystem capable of designing, evolving and integrating world-class technologies.
