Job Offer – Specialist – Mechanical Systems and Product Integration

About Balko

Balko Technologies is a Quebec-based company that designs and develops modular, interoperable data capture systems for drones, ground vehicles and maritime platforms. Our multidisciplinary team pushes the boundaries of data acquisition and fusion in the energy, infrastructure, natural resources, public safety and defence sectors.

Our mission is to democratize data capture through intelligent, modular systems designed entirely in Canada.

Join Balko to design, integrate and evolve the mechanical systems that support our products, from development through manufacturing.

Your role

As a Specialist – Mechanical Systems and Product Integration, you will contribute to the design of Balko’s new products and R&D projects while ensuring their mechanical integration, manufacturability and assemblability.

Reporting to the R&D Team Lead – Mechanical Engineering, you will carry out your assignments autonomously, in accordance with the team’s established directions and methods. You will contribute to product architecture, 3D modelling, 2D drawings, BOMs, prototyping, documentation and transfer to production.

In our low-volume production environment, you will also take responsibility for the mechanical integration and manufacturing of sold products, complementing the team’s electrical, electronic and firmware activities. This close involvement with manufacturing will allow you to quickly correct assembly issues and incorporate improvements into the products.

Key Responsibilities

  • Contribute to defining the mechanical architecture and designing products, modules, parts, assemblies and subassemblies, based on project requirements and the direction of the R&D Team Lead – Mechanical Engineering.
  • Create and structure 3D models and assemblies in SolidWorks, as well as 2D manufacturing and assembly drawings including dimensions, tolerances, specifications and bills of materials.
  • Establish and maintain assembly structures and complete bills of materials (BOMs), taking design requirements, manufacturing processes and supply constraints into account.
  • Ensure the manufacturability and assemblability of mechanical systems from the design stage onward, taking into account tolerances, functional clearances, interfaces between modules, manufacturing processes, surface treatments and assembly constraints.
  • Participate in design reviews and in the manufacturing, assembly and testing of prototypes and first units; document results and prepare the required design reports.
  • Establish and maintain the documentation required for transfer to production, including drawings, plans, assembly procedures, manufacturing instructions and other required technical documents.
  • Release approved design and manufacturing documents, maintain a rigorous document structure, and ensure the archiving and traceability of superseded revisions.
  • Transfer the manufacturing definition from SolidWorks into the ERP by creating and maintaining items, assemblies, BOMs and manufacturing recipes, and help simplify or automate this transfer.
  • Take responsibility for the mechanical integration and manufacturing of sold products, including assembly, insert installation, bonding, sanding, finishing, painting, adjustments and other required mechanical operations.
  • Identify and resolve mechanical and assemblability issues encountered during manufacturing, and apply the necessary corrective actions to keep assembly moving and ensure system delivery.
  • Maintain and improve products based on manufacturing and supply feedback to increase manufacturability, assemblability and repeatability while preserving interchangeability whenever possible.
  • Implement approved changes through the Engineering Change Management (ECM) process and consistently update models, drawings, BOMs, manufacturing documentation and ERP data before subsequent manufacturing or procurement

Profile we’re looking for

  • Relevant college or university education in mechanical design, mechanical engineering or a related field, combined with significant product design experience.
  • Excellent command of SolidWorks and the ability to effectively structure parts, assemblies, 2D drawings and complete bills of materials.
  • Good understanding of DFM/DFA, tolerancing, functional clearances and interfaces between parts, modules and systems.
  • Strong interest in hands-on work: prototyping, mechanical assembly, adjustments, finishing and troubleshooting directly on products.
  • Ability to diagnose a manufacturing or assembly issue, quickly unblock production and then develop a permanent corrective solution.
  • Good understanding of BOMs, document and revision control, ECM processes, and the use of an ERP/MRP system in a manufacturing environment.
  • Autonomy, technical and documentation rigour, practical judgement, and the ability to collaborate with engineering, production, procurement and suppliers.

Bonus point if :

  • You know Odoo or have experience with manufacturing, item and BOM functions in an ERP.
  • You have already automated or simplified the transfer of BOMs and SolidWorks data into an ERP.
  • You have experience with low-volume production of complex, modular or configurable technology products.
  • You are familiar with several manufacturing processes, such as machining, sheet metal fabrication, 3D printing, bonding, painting or surface treatments.
  • You have helped take a product from prototype to production and maintained products under revision control.

What we offer

  • Take on a hands-on role that lets you design a system, assemble it, refine it and improve it.
  • See the direct impact of your design decisions on manufactured and delivered products, and contribute to continuous improvement.
  • Work on multidisciplinary projects combining mechanics, electronics, embedded systems, sensors and advanced technologies.
  • Benefit from a comprehensive insurance plan and flexible work schedule.
  • Enjoy a hybrid work arrangement adapted to operational needs and hands-on integration activities in the workshop.
  • Join a growth-oriented culture where autonomy, initiative, rigour and continuous improvement are valued.
  • Receive a public transit allowance or take advantage of accessible on-site parking.
  • Receive a laptop and the opportunity to set up an ergonomic workstation.
  • Get financial support for your fitness membership, unlimited free coffee at the office, and more!

Do you enjoy designing a system as much as getting hands-on to make sure it actually assembles as intended? Do you like understanding why something binds or does not fit, finding a solution, and preventing the issue from recurring? Join Balko Technologies and help evolve our products from design through manufacturing.
